2008-08-05 Make freight a higher rail network priority, says Transport Committee
The European Commission should allocate at least 40% of EU transport infrastructure appropriations to the railways and prioritise freight, to reduce the need for road transport, says an own-initiative report, adopted unanimously by the Transport Committee on Tuesday. MEPs urge the Commission to concentrate EU co-financing on improving the efficiency, interoperability and upgrading of rail infrastructure, inter-modal hubs and other freight transport modes.

2008-08-05 The European Commission has agreed to the proposal of Independent MEP Marian Harkin, that all heavy goods vehicles should be compulsorily equipped with blind spot mirrors.
The Commission is to bring forward a draft directive, which will require all heavy goods vehicles to be retrofitted in order to tackle the annual death toll of over 400 throughout the EU each year caused by the failure of truck drivers to see pedestrians.

Via its Finnish subsidiary Oy Scan-Auto Ab Scania has sold all-wheel-drive off-road vehicles to the Finnish defence for delivery during 2009 and 2010. The order is yet another proof of the success of Scania’s concept of standard trucks that with some adaptations can be used for special-purpose tasks. The agreement covers twenty-one vehicles including repair and maintenance agreements, training and documentation via Scania’s Finnish distributor network, as well as an option for another four units.
